Last week Year 5 visited Cragside, the Victorian home of Lord Armstrong and the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity.

First of all we got some double cream.

Then we shook it vigorously in a sealed container until...

the butter had separated from the liquid (buttermilk).
![]()
After that the butter was washed in water to remove more buttermilk.

Finally we had to squeeze the butter using wooden butter pats to remove more liquid before shaping the butter.
