Confirmation

On Tuesday night at Winlaton Parish Church, fourteen of our Year 6 pupils were confirmed by the Bishop of Durham. They presented themselves with great credit on the night. Father Barry invites everyone to attend the 9.30am service on Sunday morning when the confirmed children from Parochial will receive their first Holy Communion.
Prior to the confirmation, Amy was baptised by Father Barry in school on Monday, watched by her parents and the Year Six children.

Non-uniform Day Friday 13 June

Our Summer Fayre on Saturday 28 June is rapidly approaching. After last year's first ever Parochial Summer Fayre we are sure this year will be just as successful and that, fingers crossed, the weather will be kind to us. The Friends are in need on prizes for a variety of stalls including the tombola and have come up with the great idea of having a non-uniform day this Friday. Rather than bringig money in we are asking the children to bring in items that could be used as prizes e.g. sweets, chocolate or bottles. Thank you for your help with this matter.

On 23rd May four girls and four boys from Year 4 enjoyed the morning representing school in the Tyne and Wear area qualifier of the Tony Blair Challenge Cup, school tennis competition. It took place at Northumberland County Ground, Jesmond on the indoor courts. The children came second out of four schools. They did extremely well considering they were up against tough competition. Their attitude and behaviour were excellent.

Chicks in Reception Class

It's been an egg-citing week in Reception...nine eggs hatched, resulting in some extremely cute chicks! The eggs came from Bill Quay Farm, and the chicks (a rare breed) will be with us until the beginning of next week. They've fascinated the children, and some of them have drawn some great pictures.

SATs 2008

Year 6 have worked extremely hard this week during their SATs tests - well done to you all! A special mention must go to Jack M, who persevered despite breaking his arm only two weeks ago, and to Amy, who had to struggle on whilst suffering from a virus. We look forward to the SATs results in July.
Harriet made a 'pinata' to celebrate the end of SATs, and the children thoroughly enjoyed whacking it until all of the sweets fell out!

On Wednesday 7th May Mr John Smith from Action Aid visited Year 4 to teach us about India and the village of Chembakolli which we are studying in Geography. We learnt that Action Aid is helping the Adivasi (the people who live in Chembakolli) to assert their right to the land and organise themselves to improve the facilities and living standards in the village. We also found out about the work, houses, schools, food, clothing and customs of the Adivasi people.

On 29th April Year 4 visited the Mosque at Newcastle University. We learnt many interesting things about Muslims and how they pray. We watched people praying and we were shown around the Prayer Hall with its patterned carpet designed to help people pray in neat rows and the Mihrab arch which shows the direction of Mecca.

Adam Bushnell's Visit

Adam Bushnell's visit was very exciting, especially when he told us some stories. The best story was The Furry Burger. It was great when Adam brought in some costumes and told a story with some of my class about The Sockburn Worm. When Adam was telling the stories he told them with lots of enthusiasm. He also showed our class two ways to plan a story: 'The Big Fat Sweaty Handprint' and 'The Story Board'.

Adam Bushnell's Visit

Adam Bushnell was very enthusiastic when he was telling his stories. He was also extremely funny. Adam's stories were interesting and slightly out of this world. My favourite story was the ghost story. The best part was when some of my class dressed up as characters from Beowolf and acted out the play. Adam also told us how to use many planning methods such as the story board and 'The Big Fat Sweaty Hand Method'.

Author comes to school

On Monday and Tuesday of this week Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 hosted the children's author Adam Bushnell. Each class spent 2 sessions with Adam and what an inspiration he was! With Year 4 he told captivating stories and encouraged the children to think of their own ideas, helping them create their very own stories. Some children had the chance to sit on his storytelling chair! We hope he can come back sometime.

A very special visitor

On the morning of Tuesday 29th January, Years 4, 5 and 6 had the privilege of meeting and talking to Rupert Soames, one of Winston Churchill's grandsons. Winston Churchill was one of the twentieth century's most famous and celebrated British Prime Ministers! Mrs Wales, mum of Lauren in Year 4 and employee of Rupert Soames, kindly organised the visit when she heard that Year 4 were learning about World War 2. We learnt many fascinating things about Winston Churchill including his fondness for cats - every cat he ever had he called it 'Mr Cat'!

Year 6 had an enjoyable time at the CLC on the afternoon of Monday 28th January. Mr Mullen was greatly impressed at how quickly the children picked up new and advanced skills. As the class didn't have sufficient time to complete their shelter designs, the children are looking forward to a return visit to the Centre next Monday afternoon (4th February)...let's hope it doesn't snow!

Here are some photographs showing the children designing 3D images using the laptops:

Last week Mr Gardner visited Year 4 to talk about his experiences as a child in World War 2, a topic which Year 4 have been learning about in their history lessons this term. Mr Gardner told us how he was evacuated to a cousin's house in Norfolk but that there were so many airfields in the Norfolk countryside that it became too dangerous for him to stay there, so he was sent back home to Whickham. He told us that some schools were closed or amalgamated due to a shortage of teachers - many went to fight in the war. we could not believe that bananas were never seen in the shops during World War 2!

Year 2 visited the CLC centre in November. They had to create a news report about events at school. Their voices were recorded onto the computer. Jamie has his head phones ready to say his part.

Roman Feast

Year 3 had a great time at their Roman Feast on Friday November 23rd. They prepared all the food, baking oatmeal biscuits and honey cakes during the week leading up to the feast day. They organised their own group entertainments, including sword fighting, Irish dancing, singing, gymnastics and joke telling. They invited parents and grandparents - some came along as guests and others volunteered to act as slaves for the day. This meant coming to the feast dressed in Roman togas and serving the food and drink to the Roman citizens. We even had two pre-school slaves who joined in the festivities. Everyone in Year 3 was dressed as a Roman citizen and they processed through the hall in style to show off their wonderful costumes. It was an excellent afternoon - everyone had lots of fun and it brought history to life in a very real way.

Visit to Durham Cathedral

As part of our RE work on Pilgimage we visited Durham Cathedral. We learnt about why Durham Cathedral has and continues to be a place of pilgrimage. A World Heritage Site, it houses the relics of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. We thought it was a majestic building with a very special atmosphere.

Year 5 had an awesome time at the Gateshead CLC on Friday 7th December.
Our tutor for the morning was very impressed with how we grasped the basic use of Computer Aided Design. By the end of the morning everyone had designed a 3D image of a water bottle, with some inventive results!
We hope to have a follow-up session later in the year....I wonder what we'll be designing then?
